The developers of Game Dev Tycoon (a Game Development Simulation Game)* released their game in simultaneously for $7.99 as well as for free as a cracked version on BitTorrent.*
The main difference, after a certain point in the game, the cracked version prevents players from generating revenues due to "piracy" from their simulated clients.
From many comments in discussion boards the developers now know how many players "acquired" their game for "free". Analysis of the usage shows that 214 paid versions were sold, in comparison to 3104 cracked games (93.6%)
